Product Information
Specification
Tai Federation of Tonkin & Nung Autonomous
Zone - French Protectorate (Vietnam - French
Indochina):
Civil Merit Order of Sip Hoc Chau, Knight's Star.
The Order was instituted in 1950, in 5 classes.
It was awarded to Vietnamese, French and
Foreign nationals for exceptional services of
civil nature.
Inscribed "Tai Federation" in French and
Vietnamese on the obverse and reverse.
The Sip Song Chau Tai ("Twelve Tai Cantons")
was a confederation of Tai chiefdoms in the
mountainous NW Vietnam.
It became an autonomous part of the French
protectorate of Tonkin, and thereby of French
Indochina, in 1889. In 1948, during the 1st
Indochina War, it was transformed into the Tai
Federation, an autonomous component of the
French Union. In 1950 it was made a crown
domain of Vietnamese emperor Bao Dai
without being integrated into the State of
Vietnam. It was dissolved after the Geneva
Agreements of 1954.
Given that it was awarded sparingly for just 4
years, the Order is scarce.
