OTTOMAN EMPIRE - TURKEY: Unofficial bronze patriotic Medal for the
suppression of the Bulgarian April Uprising in 1876.
Dated AH1293 (1876 A.D.)
On the obverse: Tughra of Sultan Abdul Aziz (Reign: 1861-1876).
On the reverse inscribed in the old Turkish Alphabet (Arabic characters):
"Glorified His Victory Minted in Constantinople 1293".
The Bulgarian April Uprising errupted on 20 April 1876 when Bulgarian
rebels attacked the headquarters of the Ottoman police in Koprivshtitsa.
While the uprising against the Turks was rapidly suppressed (by mid

operations against the rebels, ignite the international outcry against the
Ottoman Turks, led to the Russian - Turkish War of 1877 , and following
the Turkish defeat to the Congress of Berlin and the establishment of the
independent Bulgarian principality.
The medal is rare as Sultan Abdul Aziz was was deposed by his ministers on
30 May 1876, just a few days after the suppresion of the Revolt.
