Ottoman Empire - Turkey: Commemorative Medal 
for the Siege and the Liberation of Acre in 1840, 
during the 2nd Ottoman – Egyptian War, 1839-1841. 
Bronze, issued to NCOs, Petty officers and other 
ranks. 
On the obverse: The Sultan's cypher in Arabic, 
surrounded by a laurel wreath. 
On the reverse: The fort of St Jean d’Arce flying 
the Turkish flag, with six five-pointed stars 
around the top. 
Arabic inscription “The people of Syria and the 
fort of Acre”, dated A.H. 1256 (A.D. 1840).
The medal was instituted in 1843 by Sultan Abdul 
Mejid I & was awarded to the members of British, 
Austrian and Ottoman army and naval forces that 
under the command of Sir Charles Napier, took 
part in the liberation of the City of Acre, on the 
Syrian coast, after 8 years of Egyptian occupation. 
It was issued in gold for captains and flag officers, 
silver for junior officers and bronzed copper for 
NCOs, seamen and soldiers.
