Italy: WW2 Commemorative Medal of the 3rd
Alpine Division "Julia" of the Italian Royal
Army, for the Invasion and Occupation of
Albania.
On the obverse: The mountainous terrain of
Albania, an Alpine Soldier & Gjergj Kastrioti
(Skanderbeg), the Albanian National Hero.
On the reverse: The map of the Northern part
of Albania - the Division's area of operation,
circumscribed "Division Julia in Albania"
The Italian campaign in Albania lasted just 9
days, as the Italian forces faced practically no
resistance and suffered negligible casualties.
Following the Italian victory, the Albanian King
Zog I forced into exile, on 15 Apr. 1939 Albania
withdrew from the League of Nations and the
country became part of the Italian Empire, as
a separate kingdom in personal union with the
Italian Crown.
A scarce medal as the majority of the men of
Julia, never made it back to Italy, as on 28 Oct.
1940 Italy attacked Greece from Albania and
Julia (a Division of aprox. 9000 men strength)
suffered overall 9317 casualties until the end
of the Greco-Italian War (Apr. 1941).
