Greece: Enameled patriotic commemorative medal
for the Macedonian Front (or Salonika Front, after
the Greek city of Thessaloniki), 1916-1918.
Obverse: The flags of the Allied Nations that took
part in the operations on the Macedonian Front
(Greece, Great Britain, France, Italy and Yugoslavia
(for Serbia & Montenegro).
Inscribed with the quote of Pericles for the first
fallen Athenians of the Peloponnesian War:
"Aνδρών επιφανών πάσα γη τάφος" (The entire
Earth is the tomb of the glorious men).
Reverse: Commemorative of the Macedonian Front
1916-1918 (Note that the Allied forces deployed in
Salonika in 1915, the first Greek Units joined the
Allied forces on the Macedonian Front in 1916,
while Greece officially entered the War in 1917).
The medal was issued to the VIP participants on the
celebrations for the 50th anniversary (1968) of the
final Allied assault (14 Sep. 1918) that broke the
Central Powers' defensive lines and led by 30 Sep.
1918 to the capitulation of Bulgaria and effectively
decided the outcome of the Great War as the rest of
the Central Powers were unable to mobilize and
commit enough troops to stop the Allied advance
from the Balkans towards the Central Europe.
