Greece: Commemorative military medal for the
Macedonian Struggle,1903 - 1909.
Dated 1931, circumscribed "Hellenic Republic".
This is the 1st type of the medal, issued in 1931,
by the 2nd Hellenic Republic (1924-1935).
In the box of issue of the 2nd type of the medal
(Royal Issue, of 1936).
The medal was instituted by law in 1931 and by
Presidential Decree in 1932.
It was awarded to still living "Makedonomachoi"
(Macedonian fighters) - the veterans of the
Macedonian Struggle, 1903 - 1909.
The Macedonian Struggle was the Greek guerilla
warfare against the forces of the supporters of
the Bulgarian Exarchate such as the Internal
Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO)
that were aiming to the annexation of Macedonia
to Bulgaria.
The Greek efforts for Macedonia were co-ordinated
by the Hellenic Macedonian Committee (formed in
1903).
Its fighting forces were mainly former Officers of
the Hellenic Army, volunteers brought from Crete
and the Peloponnese, as well as Macedonian
Greeks.
The success of their efforts bolstered Greek
presence in the still Ottoman-ruled Macedonia
and prepared the annexation of the Greek major
part of Macedonia, following the two Balkan Wars
(1912- 1913).
The medal is very rare as only about 2000 were
awarded.
Note that following the restoration of the Monarchy,
a 2nd type of the medal was unofficially distributed
(without decree or law) in 1936.
The 2nd issue is dated 1936, it is circumscribed
"Kingdom of Greece", with the Royal Coat of Arms
on the lid of the box.
