Greece: Set of the 2 Commemorative Medals
for the 1st & 2nd Balkan Wars, 1912- 1913, as
follows:
- Commemorative Medal of the 1st Balkan War
with 4 Clasps (Giannitsa, Sarantaporo,
Elassona, Wound Clasp - the recipient was
wounded in the Battle of Sarantaporo).
- Commemorative Medal of the 2nd Balkan
War with 2 Clasps (Mpeles (Doiran) and
Kresna-Dzhumaya).
Both medals are signed by Γ. Ιακωβίδης
(Georgios (George) Iakovides).
The medals come with their diploma of issue
(the diploma covers both medals), dated 25
Mar. 1915 (it's the Independence Day of
Greece), signed by the Prime Minister and
Minister of Military Affairs El.Venizelos - the
signature is printed.
This is a rare diploma as it is also hand
signed by Pantelis Odysseas Papakyriakos
(Chief of a Volunteer Outfit) - serving as the
award presenter - and not by a military officer.
During the 1st Balkan War the alliance of
Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Serbia
liberated the remaining Christian populations
of the European territories from the Ottoman
Empire.
The War ended with the Treaty of London in
1913 but less than 1 month later
(June 1913) the Bulgarian Forces attacked the
Greek Forces North of Thessaloniki in a failed
attempt to seize the city and gain access to the
Aegean Sea.
The counter attack of the Greek Army pushed
the Bulgarian Forces deep into their own
country and under the combined attacks of
Serbia, Turkey, Montenegro and Romania,
Bulgaria forced to ask for terms.
The armistice was signed on 31 July 1913.
Bulgaria lost almost all its territorial gains
from the 1st Balkan War to Greece while the
borderline was drawn to its current position.
