The Cross was instituted in 1914 by Grand Duke 
Friedrich August, in 2 classes.
It was  awarded  to recognize outstanding 
services during front line service. 
This is the issued, iron made (magnetic) version 
of the medal. 
Only 1700 1st Class Crosses were awarded 
by the end of 1916.
