The medal was established in 1898 for
service to the Prussian Red Cross Society.
The medals were initially struck in bronze.
In 1916 the material changed to iron. Since
1917 and until 1921 the medals were struck
in zinc alloy.
This is the rarest version of the medal,
standard issue example of the period 1916 -
1917, in steel.
