FRANCE: Commemorative Medal for the 2nd
Madagascar Campaign in 1895.
Silver medal, hallmarked by the Paris Mint
(cornucopia and "Argent" (silver) for silver
purity) on the rim, signed by O. Roly.
Also hallmarked for silver with the boar's
head mark on the suspender.
This is a rare example of the 1st type of the
medal with "barel type" suspender and not
with the common "olive shaped" one.
With its rare 1895 clasp and officer's bar on
top of the ribbon.
The medal was established in 1896 and
awarded to the 15.000 soldiers and sailors
under General Duchene who participated in
the 2nd expedition on the island of
Madagascar (1894-1896).
