FINLAND: WW2 Commemorative Medal of the War of Continuation 
(1941 - 1944) against the Soviet Union. For Swedish recipients.
The Continuation War started as an attempt by Finland to regain the 
territory lost at the Winter War and if possible to occupy Russian territory, 
taking advantage of the German invasion of Russia. Initially the Finnish 
operations undid the post-Winter War concessions to the Soviet Union on 
the Karelian Isthmus and Ladoga Karelia, and the Finns captured East 
Karelia by September 1941. On the Karelian Isthmus, the Finnish Armed 
Forces halted their offensive 30 km away from Leningrad, at the pre-WW2 
border between the Soviet Union and Finland. Finnish forces did not 
participate in the siege of Leningrad directly, holding their pre-WW2 territory 
on the Karelian Isthmus until mid-1944, when the Soviet strategic counter-
offensive drove the Finns from most of the territories they had gained. 
Following the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty, Finland ceded Petsamo Province to 
the Soviet Union, leased Porkkala peninsula to the Soviets but retained its
