GREAT BRITAIN: 21st Lancers Regiment (Empress
of India) Cap Badge.
Maker marked by J. R. Gaunt, London.
The 21st Lancers (Empress of India's) was raised
in 1858 as the 3rd Bengal European Light Cavalry.
It was designated as a hussar regiment in 1862
and was titled the 21st Regiment of Hussars.
In 1897 it was re-designated as a lancer regiment,
becoming the 21st Lancers. In 1922 it was
amalgamated with the 17th Lancers to form the
17th/21st Lancers.
The most famous engagement of the Regiment
was the Battle of Omdurman during the Mahdist
War in Sudan, where Winston Churchill (then an
officer of the 4th Hussars), rode with the unit.
The Regiment won 4 Victoria Crosses during
that Battle.
The cap badge is scarce given the fact that the
Regiment was short lived and saw very limited
action during WW1 as it mostly remained in
India.
