Austro-Hungarian Empire: Patriotic WW1 cap
badge of the 3rd Army for the “Defense in the
Carpathians, 1914 - 1915”.
Signed by G. Gurschner and F. Swoboda in Vienna.
The cap badge presents KuK soldiers defending
their entrenched position on the mountains of
the Eastern Front against the Russian bear.
During the years 1914 - 1915 the 3rd KuK Army,
initially under the command of General of the
Cavalry Rudolf Ritter von Brudermann and later
under the command of General Svetozar Boroevic
von Bojna, took part in the Battle of Galizia and in
the defense of important mountain passes in the
Carpathians against the advancing Russian Army.
In Jan. 1915 supported by the German South
Army the 3rd KuK Army spearheaded the
unsuccessful offensive against Russian positions
on the Mountains in an attempt to relieve the
besieged Przemysl fortress. By Feb.1915 the 3rd
Army had suffered losses of around 88.000 men
(about 75% of its initial strength) that led to its
brief disband in June 1915.
