Austro-Hungarian Empire: WWI patriotic cap
badge commemorating the fallen soldiers of
the Battles of Limanowa and the Gorlice–
Tarnów Offensive.
Features a cavalry soldier honoring comrades
at a burial site.
Inscribed "Grabstätten der Gefallenen Helden"
(Tombs of Fallen Heroes).
Signed by F. Mazura.
The Battle of Limanowa (1-13 Dec. 1914), named
after the respective nearby town, was fought
between the Austro-Hungarian and the Russian
Army. The Austro-Hungarian victory pushed the
Russians back across the Carpathians.
The WW1 Gorlice–Tarnow Offensive although
was initially conceived as a minor German push
on the Eastern Front, it resulted into being the
main offensive effort of the Joined German and
KuK Armies in 1915.
Its success caused the collapse of the Russian
lines and the retreat of the Russian Army far into
Russia.
