Austro-Hungarian Empire: Military Merit Medal
"Signum Laudis with Crown", Silver (1st) Class.
Issued by Kaiser Franz Joseph to officers.
The medal was established in 1886 in its Bronze
Class.
The Silver Class was introduced in 1911 & ever
since became the highest merit award of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire.
This is an example made of zinc and silvered
zinc alloy (war time metal) instead of silver or
silvered bronze, due to cost limitations and
because bronze was reserved for the needs
of the war effort.
On original war time ribbon.
