Austro-Hungarian Empire: Patriotic WW1 cap
badge of the 2nd Army for the “Winter Campaign
in the Carpathians, 1914 - 1915”.
Signed by G. Gurschner in Vienna.
The cap badge presents KuK soldiers defending
their entrenched position in the Carpathians on
the Eastern Front.
During the years 1914 - 1915 the 2nd KuK Army,
under the command of General Eduard von Bohm-
Ermolli took part in the Battle of Galizia and in the
operations in Russian Poland.
In Feb. 1915 the 2nd KuK Army was moved to the
Carpathian Mountains to reinforce the 3rd KuK
Army due to the heavy losses the later had
suffered (losses of around 88.000 men - about 75%
of its initial strength) .
The 2nd KuK Army spearheaded the 2nd
unsuccessful offensive against the Russian
positions in an attempt to relieve the besieged
Przemysl fortress.
By the end of the campaign, the 2nd and 3rd
Armies were nearly annihilated.
