Austrian Empire: Commemorative medal for
the 1864 War vs Denmark, over Schleswig
Holstein (2nd Schleswig War).
With the Royal Ciphers of Kaiser Franz Joseph
of Austria and King Wilhelm I of Prussia.
This is the rare Austrian type of the medal with
the Royal Cipher of Kaiser Franz Joseph
placed on the left.
Bronze made example, without the inscription
"Aus Erobertem Geschuetz" (From captured
Cannons).
The medal was instituted in 1864 by King
Wilhelm I and Kaiser Franz Joseph and was
awarded to the members of both Armies that
participated in the War against Denmark.
Note that the Austrian type of the medal is a
lot rarer compared to the Prussian respective
one as the Austrian Army that partcipiated in
the War (aprox. 23.000 men) were 3 times
smaller compared to the Prussian Forces
(aprox. 60.000 men).
